As we draw closer to the end of 2022, we also say good riddance to the 2022 portion of the Kennesaw State hockey schedule. It wasn’t the worst-case scenario for the Owls, but the results certainly left more to desire. With that being said, plenty of games are still left to change the tune of the 2022-23 season.
Unfortunately, 8 of the Owls’ first 12 games took place on the road, and what’s even more unfortunate is: they were unable to win any of them. Poor defense and scarce goal-scoring led to some lopsided scores. However, in my opinion, those scores(and away record) don’t correctly portray the ability of this team.
Kennesaw has run into trouble with their discipline, or lack thereof, in virtually all of their games. They have played an inordinate amount of time short-handed due to penalties, which leads to numerous offensive chances for the opposition and in turn, takes offense chances away from the Owls. This is shown in KSU’s decidedly negative goal differential. If the Owls are able to take fewer penalties, play more of the game at even strength, and play a connected defensive game, they could easily win 50-70% of their remaining games. It’s much easier said than done, but Goaltender Connor Lakly has shown he can make enough saves to
keep his team in games, if the team follows suit, racking up victories is definitely attainable for Kennesaw State.
