Kennesaw State proudly removed the 0 from the win column on Saturday night with a thrilling 3-2 win over Middle Tennessee State. The Owls dropped the first game of the back-to-back mostly due to self-inflicted errors and undisciplined play. They flipped the script on Saturday with a complete 60-minute effort that should inspire confidence amongst the team.
The Owls had to show some mental toughness though. In the final minute of a well-played opening period, KSU allowed a back-breaking shorthanded goal after an offensive zone turnover. Despite the mental hurdles, the Owls scored a pair of breakaway goals in the second period, including the go-ahead goal by (48)Chris Scott, who received a beautiful stretch pass from forward (22)Evan Casteneda.
The Owls would carry the 2-1 lead late into the 3rd Period, looking to salt the game away on the power play with just minutes to go. But another crushing shorthanded goal seemingly dashed KSU’s hopes of winning the game in regulation. Goaltender (35)Connor Lakly got tied up with an Owl defenseman back
checking on the play, allowing an open net for the Blue Raiders. But on this night, the Owls would not be denied. Less than 2 minutes after the tying goal (18)Aaron Montgomery corralled a loose puck in the crease and slammed it to the back of the net to give the Owls the lead and eventually the win.
A great team effort was rewarded with a big 3-2 win, the very first of the year for Kennesaw State.
The Owls look to add to their win column next weekend as they travel to South Carolina to take on The College of Charleston.
